LG display announced in August 2019 that it will begin production of OLED TV panels at its 8.5 generation OLED wafer plant in Guangzhou, China. However, it was later reported that LGD faced technical problems and production did not start as planned in October 2019 - LGD postponed production to the first quarter of 2020. According to the latest report from South Korea, LGD finally solved the technical problems and managed to optimize the yield of the new fab. Guangzhou factory will start mass production at the end of this month. LGD plans to ship more than 6 million OLED TV panels in 2020, including the smaller 48 Inch OLED TV panels launched at the international consumer electronics show in 2020. LGD's new plant has a monthly capacity of 60000 substrates and will expand to 90000 by 2021. The Guangzhou fab is similar to LG's current Paju OLED TV fab, and LGD believes it will soon expand its scale. But the company also decided to adopt several new technologies in the new fab, mainly to improve productivity. In addition, LGD chose to use the new OLED stack (while improving efficiency and productivity), and also chose to produce new equipment in China (rather than the equipment used in poju, South Korea). The Guangzhou Fab was announced in 2017, but the company found approval from the Chinese and Korean governments to be a challenge, culminating in approval in July 2018. The total investment in the new fab is about $4.2 billion. The new plant is a joint venture between LG display and Guangzhou Development Zone (GDD). LG display holds 70% of the joint venture. Setting up new factories in China and using more advanced equipment can reduce costs. DSCC estimates that the subsidy will reduce the depreciation cost of LGD by 65%. The windfall could be that the Fab could allow LGD to circumvent Japan's recent export ban on South Korea
