On January 3, according to foreign media reports, TSMC, which manufactures chips for apple, Huawei, etc., has been at the forefront of the industry in recent years, taking the lead in mass production of 7Nm technology, and the more advanced 5nm technology is expected to be put into production in the first quarter of this year.

But in the next generation of 3nm chip manufacturing process, TSMC may have a challenge from Samsung, which plans to take the lead in using this advanced process to manufacture chips. In a report by foreign media on the visit of Samsung Electronics leader Lee Jae Rong to the semiconductor R & D center in Hwa City, Gyeonggi do, South Korea, Samsung plans to take the lead in mass production of 3nm technology. During this visit on Thursday local time, Li Jae Rong and his colleagues discussed the strategy of becoming the first in the world to use 3nm technology to manufacture chips.
According to the reports of foreign media, Samsung Electronics will adopt the GAA architecture for its 3nm process technology, which is also the successor of FinFET technology at present, and can enable chip manufacturers to develop into the process range of microchips. Before the mass production of 3nm process, Samsung needs to mass produce 5nm process. Samsung completed the research and development of 5nm FinFET process technology based on EUV technology in April last year, and is expected to mass produce in the first half of this year.
Samsung said that compared with the 5nm process, the 3nm GAA technology can reduce the theoretical area of the chip by 35%, reduce the energy consumption by 50% and improve the performance by 30%. Thursday's visit to Huacheng's Semiconductor R & D center is Samsung's first official trip in 2020. A Samsung spokesman said Li's visit to Huacheng's report body R & D center again highlights Samsung's determination to become a top non memory chip manufacturer.
Amazon, Facebook and other technology giants without chip manufacturing capabilities have started to develop their own AI chips and data center chips to better adapt to the development of their own business, which will also lead to increased demand for chip manufacturing. Samsung has been optimistic about the development of this field and is ready to increase investment in chip manufacturing. At the end of last year, Samsung Electronics announced plans to invest in the next 10 years. 1 33 trillion won, equivalent to about 114.7 billion US dollars, is used to develop the chip manufacturing business.
